Session Summary

The aging work population today are experiencing increasing incidences of life-changing disabilities associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), obesity, stress, poor nutrition and lack of exercise. This trend has become exacerbated by challenges of working remotely from home. Resolving these complex problems requires an equally life-changing integrative approach. In this webinar, an integrated approach utilizing behavioral-based ergonomics, wellness interventions, and ADA and EEOC-compliant physical ability testing will be addressed. Behavioral-based ergonomics involves increasing compliance with ergonomic and wellness interventions by helping employees understand: 1.) causes of MSDs and most disabling illnesses, 2.) physiological effects of ergonomics and wellness interventions, 3.) how lifestyle changes improve health, and 4.) harmful consequences of non-compliance and poor lifestyles. The presenters, Dr. Richard Bunch, and Mr. Trevor Bardarson, licensed and orthopedic board certified physical therapists and certified behavioral-based ergonomic specialists, will share over 50 years of combined field and clinical experience applying “behavioral-based” ergonomic programs and physical ability tests (PATs) to industries. They will explain work-related (office and field) and lifestyle causes of the most common types MSDs and illnesses affecting the workforce today. This will be followed by descriptions of how to apply optimum injury and illness interventions, improve safety by properly selecting and accommodating employees, and improve employee compliance with recommended interventions. Attendees will come away from this webinar with better knowledge about preventing injuries, improving health, increasing job engagement, and maximizing productivity for aging, deconditioned, and remote workers. So do not miss this dynamic webinar that will not only be life-changing for your organization’s employees, but for yourself as well! Learning Objectives: 1. Provide physiological explanations that motivate employee compliance to prevent injuries and improve health. 2. Apply behavioral-based ergonomic interventions and lifestyle changes to prevent injuries and improve health. 3. Apply ADA and EEOC-compliant physical ability tests to properly job match and accommodate employees.

Session Summary

Can you afford another injury? Ergonomic injuries are expected to increase by 16% in the next 12-18 months. Employers in every industry are looking ahead to a changing landscape when it comes to working. An aging workforce, more employees working remotely, and new external stressors will all play a role in ergonomic safety. As a result, many safety leaders are preparing for new challenges and bolstering their safety programming with an increased focus on ergonomics, mental health and wellness. With workers’ compensation costs always rising, a single claim can drain tens of thousands of dollars from an employer’s budget, not to mention the operational obstacles that come with absenteeism and reduced productivity from chronic ergonomic pain.

Session Summary

When it comes to measuring your ergonomic program, too often, organizations collect data and stop. The effectiveness of progress and program success is contingent on how an organization uses the collected data to make strategic decisions.

With proper data collection and interpretation, organizations can improve ergonomic risk mitigation, increase employee engagement, allocate resources more efficiently, and ultimately reduce costs while improving outcomes.

Session Summary

An Evidence Based Injury Prevention Solution to Combating WMSD’s in the Workplace. Posture, Pain and Performance

The signs of an injury are there long before the symptoms begin. Growing evidence is correlating the increased risk of injury to poor postures and limited movement patterns. While most safety and ergonomic interventions focus on limiting the exposures of excessive movements and awkward postures, it is critical to acknowledge and improve the necessity of proper human movement and functional capabilities of your employees. In this workshop we will explore the complexities of human movement and how you and your employees most likely have underlying movement limitations that strongly contribute to the increased risk of pain, injury, and extended recovery periods. We will explore some of the case studies and research that support these claims. You will participate in the simple six step ACM Movement Pattern Assessment and the proven corrective exercise approach that is the foundation to combating the increased risk of WMSDs in the workplace.

Every Movement Matters: How Changing Posture and Movement Habits can Reduce Injuries

Poor posture and improper movement are becoming more common in the workplace. The result leads to musculoskeletal conditions that can be prevented. De-valuing posture, the introduction of mobile devices, and the lack of training on proper biomechanics have all contributed to this epidemic. Every movement matters. We can change posture and movement habits to reduce injuries. Alicia Crelinsten is a certified athletic therapist, athletic trainer, and strength and conditioning specialist. She has worked with team Canada at the Olympics, Cirque du Soleil as a therapist on the Performance Medicine team, and countless industrial athletes and office workers. She founded ReAlign Consulting to help provide injury prevention solutions. Her work with clients bridges the gap between high performance sport and a high performance life.

Telephonic Nurse Triage and Early Intervention: Strategies to Help the Safety Manager Control Recordable MSD’s

Not all work-related musculoskeletal discomfort or injuries need to convert to OSHA recordable claims. Timely assessment with guidance, reassurance, and OSHA-accepted first aid care/early intervention (EI), often resolve concerns without additional medical care. Triage telephone contact with a registered nurse removes care decision making from supervisors, reassures employees, and initiates this timely care of ice and OTC anti-inflammatories, which are reasonable MSD first aid care. Other cases may need face-to-face assessment within 24 hours for hands on evaluation, adding use of elastic tape, massage, and stretching. We will highlight the successful scaled onsite EI service for American Packaging Corporation and how closely working with site safety managers contained progression of concerns. Progression to add telephonic nurse triage and at clinic EI further benefited this leading multi-site flexible packaging converter control MSD claims in a cost-effective way.

On-Site Early Intervention Programs 2.0 - Transforming a Reactive Culture to one of Proactive Education at Tennant Company

Onsite Early Intervention 2.0 focuses on our move to proactive education from the top down in an organization. The main focus being to equip leadership at the supervisor level with tools and education to be proactive versus reactive. This includes training on such things as: hazard identification, accident investigation, understanding and identifying what a high-risk employee is and what high-risk activities are, as well as when to engage with on-Site injury prevention specialists and use their expertise, and much more. We have a comprehensive playbook that gives our leaders a way to problem solve with a goal of acting before the problem actually comes to fruition. The plan is process driven, but is behavior focused. We focus on the employee and what they’re doing, but then the leader has strategic planning that surrounds a single point lesson which allows discussion, understand employee perspective, and get away from reacting to things that have already happened.
